Cleaning Band Saw Blades.

Band Saw blades used to saw logs or oil types of wood need to be cleaned after each use. The steps are as follows.

  1. Be sure the Band Saw is SHUT OFF.
  2. Open the Band Saw Blade Drum case to expose the saw blade and drum (see image below).
  3. Raise the Saw Blade guard as high as possible.
  4. Rotate the Saw blade by turning the drum in the opposite direction when cutting (Keep fingers away from blade teeth as they are sharp) until you find the weld joint in the blade. This is your starting point.
  5. Apply blade cleaner to the blade. The shop provides “pitch & tar remover” for this.
  6. Use a wire brush to scrub the blade getting off all wood oils, pitch and other gunk.
  7. Wipe blade clean with a rag.
  8. Rotate the Saw blade to expose the next dirty area.
  9. Repeat steps 4 thru 7 until you find the weld joint, your starting point.
  10. Lower the blade guard and close the drum cover.
